Vietnam (it was weird not calling her Vietnam oh God)

[Imagine this: Deep beneath the choppy waters of some generic ocean there is a kingdom that wasn't known to the people topside. Technology hasn't advanced enough to reach the depths that housed the grandeur that was Veriser, sister city to Antlantica just down the trench. If anyone asked, Veriser came first – it did not matter that the sea scrolls got misplaced proving the bold proclamation. The reigning mer-clan had been there since the very beginning and were known for their honesty (or so they said) and grace (again, self-proclaimed). Of course, their current King, a flamboyant merman with fair hair and skin named Francis, was probably the most passionate devotee to his family's legacy.

Tonight was the ball celebrating Veriser's founding and the engagement of his eldest daughter in a classic two for one that ensured that there was going to be a lot of kelp shots and sea glam. There had been elaborate set up for food, music, the guests and their seating, and of course a dance – because what ball wouldn't be complete with a very technical dance routine by the rest of his daughters (and a son but he was terribly shy). Having put the final touches into place, he notes that one thing is missing. Sen, his middle daughter, had been conveniently absent from rehearsal.

She'd always been a free spirit but this was not the time, and he finds himself at her door, knocking impatiently.]

Sen! Open this door at once!

[Who even knew if she was in there? The idea makes him want to use his head to bang on the door instead of his hand.]

[Now, Sen had always been diligent. A good daughter (usually), organised, resourceful. Heck, she could've organised this whole party if asked, just for her older sister. Problem. She also liked to rebel when it came to her father just because she valued her independence a little too much.

And part of that, the very technical dance routine? She didn't want part of it. It was embarrassing, a little too seductive for her liking, at least not in front of so many merpeople? Come on.

Now, she was about to sneak out the window so that her family wouldn't be able to see or know she was there and then make some excuse later, but it turns out that Francis has reached her room just as her hands touched the window sill. No!! This means that if she opened that window, he would be able to tell she's there. Just because of sound. Dammit all!

THINK.

She remains still for now.]

It's always weird. Always.

[They're mer-people, Sen. All the dancing is mildly provocative! Really, it's what happens when they're underwater and fluttering about. It was all going to be wonderful and this wedding celebration was going to go off without a hitch.

There's almost that token "I'm respecting your privacy by knocking but ruining it by coming in anyway" token to parenting and he jiggles the handle. Child don't make him pick this lock. He's annoying, sure, but must you be so independent?]

Honestly, Sen. If you are in there please let me in and we can rationally discuss your absence at the rehearsal. You are integral to this evening being as splendid as it needs to be, and your sister will be distraught...

[This is, unfortunately, not the first time he's had a conversation with her bedroom doors. There have even been a few times when she LEGIT wasn't in there, but he prays this isn't one of them. He didn't want to be frustrated while marrying off his daughter after all. What mer-papa would?]
